Is Antalya safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Antalya is a safe city for visitors, with a large, well-policed tourist industry and low levels of violent crime against tourists. The realistic issues are overcharging and pushy selling in Kaleiçi and the harbour, occasional pickpocketing, aggressive driving and, in summer, the heat. Terrorism warnings that apply to parts of Turkey are not a day-to-day concern on the Turquoise Coast, but check official advice before travel.

The real risks

Overcharging and touts

Restaurant and boat-trip touts around the old harbour and Kaleiçi may quote one price and charge another. Ask for a menu with prices, check the bill, and agree boat-trip prices (and what lunch includes) before boarding.

Pickpocketing

Uncommon but possible in crowded spots such as the harbour, markets and trams. Keep phones out of back pockets and bags closed.

Currency tricks

Shops and taxis may quote in euros at poor rates, or give change in lira at a bad rate. Pay in lira and know roughly what the exchange rate is.

Traffic

Driving is fast and assertive and pedestrian crossings are not always respected. Cross carefully and drive defensively if you rent a car; watch for speed cameras.

Heat

July and August highs average around 35–38°C. Visit Perge, Aspendos and Termessos early in the morning with water, a hat and sun cream.

Sea conditions

Konyaaltı shelves steeply in places; swim near lifeguarded areas and keep children close.

Areas and times to take care

Kaleiçi, the harbour, Konyaaltı and Lara are lively and busy into the night in season and are fine to walk around. As in any large city, be more aware late at night around bars and clubs and in quiet unlit side streets of the old town in winter, when many places are shut. Termessos and other mountain sites are remote: go in daylight, with water and good shoes.

Getting around safely

Trams and buses are safe and cheap. Taxis are metered; insist the meter is on, or agree a price for longer trips, and use the official taxi ranks at the airport. Ride-hailing apps such as BiTaksi and Uber (taxi category) work in Antalya. Late at night, taxis are the practical option.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally travel in Antalya without problems, especially in the tourist areas. Expect some persistent attention or flirtatious remarks from touts and shop staff; a firm 'no, thank you' and walking on usually ends it. Beachwear is normal on the beaches but cover up in town and in mosques (scarf for hair, shoulders and knees covered). Choose well-reviewed guesthouses and take taxis rather than walking long distances alone late at night.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is treated but most people drink bottled water, which is cheap. Heat and sun are the main health risk from June to September: drink plenty, avoid midday sightseeing and use high-factor sun cream. Pharmacies (eczane) are everywhere and helpful for minor problems; private hospitals in Antalya are used to tourists, so travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies (police, ambulance, fire).
