How to get from Plovdiv to Thassos
Driving from Plovdiv to Keramoti takes about 4 h via Kardzhali and the Makaza–Nymfaia border crossing into Greece, followed by a ferry of about 35–40 minutes to Limenas on Thassos. Public transport has no direct link and needs several changes.
Best option: Car. Driving through the Rhodope Mountains and taking the short car ferry is far faster than bus connections.

- In August, arrive early at Keramoti to avoid queues for the ferry.
- Many Bulgarian travel agencies sell summer packages including transport to Thassos.
Common questions
How long is the drive from Plovdiv to Thassos?
About 4 h to Keramoti, for about 250 km via Kardzhali and the Makaza–Nymfaia crossing, then about 35–40 minutes on the ferry to Limenas. Mountain roads in the Rhodopes slow the drive in places. Allow extra time on summer weekends.
Is there a direct bus from Plovdiv to Thassos?
There is no regular year-round direct bus. In summer, some Bulgarian agencies run coaches to Thassos or Kavala as part of holiday packages. Otherwise, travel via the border area or Kavala with changes, which can take most of a day. Check current options locally before you travel.
Which border crossing should I use?
Makaza–Nymfaia, south of Kardzhali, is usually the most direct from Plovdiv to Kavala and Keramoti. Kulata is much farther west. Since both countries are in Schengen, there are normally no routine passport checks, but carry ID. Roads on the Bulgarian side cross the Rhodopes and are slower in winter.
Do I need to book the Thassos ferry?
Usually not. Ferries between Keramoti and Limenas run often in summer and tickets are sold at the port. In August and on busy weekends, expect queues and arrive early. Kavala–Prinos ferries, about 1 h 15, are an alternative if Keramoti is busy. Check current timetables outside summer, when sailings are fewer.
