Tips

Common questions

How long is the train from Naples to Rome?

High-speed trains run by Trenitalia (Frecciarossa) and Italo take about 1 hour 10 minutes from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini. Regional trains take about 2 to 2 hours 45 minutes depending on whether they go via Formia or Cassino. Both arrive at central stations, so the high-speed train is the fastest door-to-door option by a wide margin.

Can I visit Rome as a day trip from Naples?

Yes. With trains of about 70 minutes and departures several times an hour, you can leave Naples in the morning and return in the evening. Focus on one area, such as the Colosseum and Forum or the Vatican, because Rome is large. Book return tickets in advance to keep high-speed fares low.

What is the cheapest way from Naples to Rome?

Long-distance buses such as FlixBus or Itabus often start at about €5–10, but take two and a half to three hours. Regional trains cost a fixed price of about €13. High-speed trains booked early can also be close to €10–20, which makes them good value for the time saved.

Do I need to book the train ahead?

For regional trains, no: the price is fixed and you can buy on the day. For Frecciarossa and Italo, booking ahead is strongly recommended because prices rise as the train fills, and on Friday evenings, Sundays and holidays some trains sell out. Tickets are available in the operators' apps and at the stations.
