Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct ferry from Kythira to Monemvasia?

No regular direct service. Ferries run from Diakofti on Kythira to Neapoli on the Peloponnese, taking about an hour. From Neapoli, drive about 45 minutes to an hour north to Monemvasia. Check current timetables, as schedules change by season and weather.

Can I take my car?

Yes. The Diakofti–Neapoli ferry carries cars. Car fares are moderate, and booking ahead is advisable in summer. Having a car makes the onward trip to Monemvasia much easier, since bus links from Neapoli are limited and do not always connect with the ferry.

Is there a bus from Neapoli?

KTEL Lakonias runs limited services from Neapoli towards Molaoi and Monemvasia, but connections with ferry arrivals are not guaranteed. Check current timetables, or arrange a taxi or rental car instead. Taxis from Neapoli to Monemvasia take about 45 minutes to an hour.

Can I do it as a day trip?

Possibly, by car, if the ferry schedule allows an early departure and a late return. Monemvasia deserves at least a few hours, especially the upper town. Staying overnight inside the castle town is a popular choice. In winter, with fewer sailings, a same-day return is rarely possible.
