Tips

Common questions

Is there a bus?

Yes. KTEL Ioanninon buses on the Ioannina–Trikala line stop at Metsovo a few times a day, taking about an hour. Timetables are reduced at weekends and in winter, so check current timetables before travelling. Buses leave from Ioannina's main bus station.

How long is the drive?

About 45 minutes on the Egnatia Odos motorway, which has tunnels and bridges through the Pindus mountains. Tolls are a few euros. The old mountain road via the Katara Pass is slower and can be closed in winter.

Can I do it as a day trip?

Yes. Metsovo is easy to visit for a day from Ioannina, with time for the village, the museums and a meal. Staying overnight lets you explore nearby villages and walk in the mountains. Popular nearby stops include the Aoos Springs lake and the villages of the Zagori, which are best reached by car.

Do I need winter tyres?

In winter, snow and ice are common around Metsovo. The motorway is usually cleared, but local roads can require chains. Check road conditions and weather before travelling, and carry chains if renting a car. In heavy snowfall the Egnatia Odos may impose restrictions for vehicles without chains.
