Common questions
Is there a direct train from Interlaken to Zurich?
Most journeys involve one change, usually in Bern, with trains timed to connect closely; the total trip is about two hours. The alternative scenic route goes via the Brünig line to Lucerne and then on to Zürich, taking about 2 h 45. Check the SBB timetable for the best connection on your day.
Can I do Zurich as a day trip from Interlaken?
Yes. With trains about every half hour and a travel time of about two hours, you can leave Interlaken in the morning, spend six or seven hours in Zurich and be back in the evening. Going one way via Lucerne makes it a scenic loop.
What is the cheapest way from Interlaken to Zurich?
A supersaver train ticket bought in advance in the SBB app, or a Half Fare Card if you travel a lot in Switzerland. Full-fare tickets cost about CHF 65–75. Driving needs a CHF 40 vignette plus fuel and parking, so it rarely saves money for one or two people.
Do I need to book ahead?
Not for a seat: Swiss trains do not require reservations, and full-fare tickets are flexible. Booking ahead only matters for discounted supersaver tickets, which are tied to a specific train. If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, just board. Seat reservations are optional on most trains.
