Common questions
Is there a train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
Yes. Trains on the North–South line stop at Ninh Binh, about 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 from Hanoi Station, with a few departures a day. The station is in Ninh Binh city, so you will need a taxi or Grab to Tam Coc or Trang An. Check current timetables and book on the Vietnam Railways site or at the station.
Can I do Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi?
Yes. Many tours leave Hanoi in the morning, visit Trang An or Tam Coc by boat and Hoa Lu or Hang Mua, and return in the evening. It is about four hours of travel in total. Staying one or two nights is more relaxed and lets you visit the boats early before the crowds.
What is the cheapest way from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
Public buses from Giap Bat bus station are the cheapest, followed by the train in its basic seat classes. Limousine vans cost a bit more but include hotel pick-up and drop-off, saving the cost of taxis at both ends. For two or more people, they often work out close to the bus.
Do I need to book ahead?
For limousine vans, book a day ahead through your hotel or the operator so they can schedule your pick-up. Train tickets can sell out around weekends and holidays, so buy them a few days in advance. During Tet and national holidays, book everything well ahead, as demand is very high.
