Tips

Common questions

How long does it take to drive from Hallstatt to Ljubljana?

About 3 h 30 to 4 hours for roughly 300 km via the Tauern motorway, Villach and the Karawanken tunnel. You need an Austrian vignette, tolls for the Tauern and Karawanken tunnels, and a Slovenian e-vignette. Expect delays on summer weekends at the tunnels.

Is there a train from Hallstatt to Ljubljana?

There is no direct train. You take the small ferry to Hallstatt station, a train to Attnang-Puchheim or Salzburg, then a train via Villach to Ljubljana. The trip takes about 5–7 hours with changes. Check current timetables on the ÖBB website, as some connections are infrequent.

Can I stop at Lake Bled on the way?

Yes. Lake Bled is just off the motorway after the Karawanken tunnel, about 30–40 minutes before Ljubljana. A stop of two or three hours is easy by car. By train, Lesce-Bled station is on the Villach–Ljubljana line, and buses run from there to the lake.

What tolls are there between Hallstatt and Ljubljana?

You need an Austrian motorway vignette, plus separate section tolls for the Tauern tunnel and the Karawanken tunnel, which are not covered by the vignette. In Slovenia, cars need an e-vignette for all motorways. Buy the vignettes online before you drive, as cameras check number plates and fines are steep.
