Swiss trains take about 3 h 45 to 4 h: an SBB train from Genève to Visp, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn up to Zermatt. Zermatt is car-free, so drivers park at Täsch and take the shuttle train for the last few kilometres.

Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct train from Geneva to Zermatt?

No. You change once, in Visp (occasionally in Brig): an SBB train runs from Genève to Visp in about 2 h 30, and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn continues to Zermatt in a little over an hour. Connections are generally timed, so the total is about 3 h 45 to 4 hours. Check the SBB timetable for your exact connection.

Can I drive to Zermatt?

Not all the way. Zermatt is car-free, so you drive to Täsch, about 5 km below, leave the car in the large Matterhorn Terminal car park or another garage, and take the shuttle train, which runs about every 20 minutes and takes about 12 minutes. You also need a Swiss motorway vignette for the drive from Geneva.

Can I visit Zermatt as a day trip from Geneva?

It is possible but not ideal. With about 4 hours each way, you would spend eight hours travelling for a short time in Zermatt, and cloud can hide the Matterhorn on any given day. Staying at least one night gives you a second chance to see the mountain and time for Gornergrat or other lifts.

How can I save money on the Geneva to Zermatt train?

Book Supersaver tickets on the SBB app or website early for the Geneva–Visp section, which can significantly reduce the fare. A Half Fare Card halves most fares, including the mountain railways. If you will travel a lot in Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass covers the whole route. Prices for the Visp–Zermatt section vary less.
