How to get from Galaxidi to Kalavryta
Galaxidi and Kalavryta face each other across the Gulf of Corinth, so the trip is by car: about 2 h 30 via Nafpaktos and the Rio–Antirrio bridge, or a similar time using the Agios Nikolaos–Aigio car ferry across the gulf. Public transport needs several changes and most of a day.
Best option: Car. With a car you choose the bridge or the ferry and reach Kalavryta in about two and a half hours.

Tips
- Combine the drive with the rack railway: park in Diakopto and ride up the gorge to Kalavryta.
- Fill up before the mountain road; there are few fuel stations near Kalavryta.
- In ski season, weekend traffic to the Kalavryta ski centre is heavy.
- Nafpaktos old harbour makes a good stop on the bridge route.
Common questions
What is the fastest way from Galaxidi to Kalavryta?
By car, either over the Rio–Antirrio bridge or on the Agios Nikolaos–Aigio car ferry; both take around 2 h 30 in total. The ferry can be slightly quicker if you arrive just before a sailing. From Aigio or Diakopto, the mountain road up to Kalavryta takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
Is there a bus from Galaxidi to Kalavryta?
Not directly. You would need KTEL buses from Galaxidi towards Nafpaktos or Antirrio, then buses on the Peloponnese side towards Aigio or Diakopto, and then onward to Kalavryta or the rack railway. It is slow and the connections are infrequent; check current timetables.
Can I take the rack railway to Kalavryta?
Yes, for the last part. The Diakopto–Kalavryta rack railway climbs through the Vouraikos gorge in about an hour. You need to reach Diakopto first, by car or bus. Departures are few and vary with the season, so check the timetable and book in busy periods.
Can I do it as a day trip?
Yes, by car, with an early start. You have time to see Kalavryta, the Agia Lavra monastery or the Cave of the Lakes and be back in Galaxidi by evening. In winter, check road and weather conditions for the mountain section before setting off.
