Tips
- Bulgaria uses the lev and Romania the leu; a little of each helps for tolls and coffee stops.
- Veliko Tarnovo is a good overnight stop if you want to break the drive.
- Romania and Bulgaria are in Schengen, so there are normally no passport checks at Giurgiu–Ruse, but carry ID.
- Rental cars need permission to cross the border; ask when booking.
Common questions
Is there a direct bus or train from Brasov to Sofia?
Not as a regular service. Most travellers go via Bucharest, then cross into Bulgaria at Giurgiu–Ruse. Brasov to Bucharest is about 2 h 30–3 h by train, and Bucharest to Sofia about 6–7 h by coach. Some private operators run occasional Brasov–Sofia links; search booking sites for your date.
How long is the drive from Brasov to Sofia?
About 7–8 h for roughly 520–560 km, via Bucharest, the Giurgiu–Ruse Danube Bridge and either Veliko Tarnovo or Pleven. The DN1 out of Brasov is busy at weekends. You need a vignette in each country and pay a toll on the Danube bridge. Check the bridge for roadworks before you go.
Is there a flight from Brasov to Sofia?
There is no direct flight as far as we know. Brasov's airport has limited routes, and flying via another airport would take longer than driving. From Bucharest's Otopeni airport there may be flights to Sofia, but by the time you reach Bucharest the coach is nearly as quick.
Do I need a vignette to drive from Romania to Bulgaria?
Yes. Romania requires a rovinieta for its national roads and Bulgaria requires an electronic vignette for most roads outside towns. Both can be bought online before you leave. There is also a separate toll on the Giurgiu–Ruse Danube Bridge. Rental cars usually have the Romanian rovinieta already; check with the company.
