Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct train from Bologna to Verona?

Yes. Trenitalia runs direct trains between Bologna Centrale and Verona Porta Nuova. Frecciargento high-speed trains take about 50 minutes, and regional trains about 1 hour 30 minutes. Between them there are trains roughly every hour or better through the day. Check current timetables for the exact times.

Can I do Verona as a day trip from Bologna?

Yes, easily. With a journey of under an hour on high-speed trains and frequent regionals, you can spend a full day seeing the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and Castelvecchio. If you are attending an evening opera at the Arena, check the last train back before booking.

What is the cheapest way?

Regional trains are the cheapest fixed fare at around €10, and need no reservation. Early-booked Frecciargento fares can be similar or slightly more. Coaches can be cheaper still but take longer and stop outside the centres. Driving adds tolls, fuel and parking costs.

Do I need to book ahead?

For regional trains, no; buy a ticket on the day and validate it if it is a paper ticket. For Frecciargento, booking ahead is recommended because prices rise closer to departure. During the opera season and holidays, trains can be busy.
