Tips

Common questions

Does Koh Phangan have an airport?

No. The nearest airports are Koh Samui, a short boat ride away, and Surat Thani on the mainland, from where buses connect to ferry piers. Flying to Samui is quickest; Surat Thani is usually cheaper and served by low-cost airlines from Bangkok Don Mueang. Either way, the last stretch to Koh Phangan is always by boat.

What is the cheapest way from Bangkok to Koh Phangan?

A combined overnight bus and ferry ticket, about THB 1,200–1,600, is usually cheapest. The overnight train to Surat Thani with a bus and ferry costs a little more but is more comfortable in a sleeper berth. Low-cost flights to Surat Thani can be competitive if booked early and save a night of travel.

How long does it take from Bangkok to Koh Phangan?

About four to five hours door to door via a flight to Koh Samui and a boat, six to eight hours via Surat Thani by air, and twelve to sixteen hours overland by bus or train plus ferry. Weather, boat schedules and connections make a big difference, so do not book tight onward plans on arrival day.

Do I need to book ahead?

Around Full Moon Party dates and in the December to April high season, yes: Samui flights, sleeper berths and accommodation sell out. Outside those times you can often buy boat tickets on the day. Joint bus-and-boat tickets are easiest bought from the operator directly, either online or at their offices.
