How to get from Annecy to Geneva
Annecy and Geneva are only about 45 km apart by road. Driving or taking a coach takes about 45 min to 1 h, while Léman Express regional trains via Annemasse take about 1 h 20 to 1 h 30. Coaches also run straight to Geneva Airport.

Tips
- Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF); many places in Geneva also take euros, but change is given in francs.
- Travellers staying in Geneva hotels can get a free Geneva Transport Card for local buses and trams.
- Avoid driving across the border between about 7 and 9 am and 5 and 7 pm, when commuter traffic is heavy.
- If flying from Geneva, the direct airport coach saves a change in the city.
Common questions
Is there a direct train from Annecy to Geneva?
There is a Léman Express regional train link, running via La Roche-sur-Foron and Annemasse to Genève-Cornavin in about 1 h 20 to 1 h 30. It is slower than the road because the line goes round rather than straight north. Check the current timetable, as some services may need a change at Annemasse or La Roche-sur-Foron.
Can I get from Annecy to Geneva Airport directly?
Yes. Several coach companies run from Annecy bus station to Geneva Airport, taking roughly 45 min to 1 h. Times are planned around flights in ski season and summer, with fewer departures at other times. Book online in advance during busy weekends. A private transfer or taxi is also possible but costs much more.
Do I need a passport to go from Annecy to Geneva?
France and Switzerland are both in the Schengen area, so there are usually no routine border checks, but spot checks happen. Carry your passport or national ID card, and make sure you have any visa you need for the Schengen area. Customs limits apply to goods such as meat and alcohol carried into Switzerland.
Do I need a Swiss vignette to drive to Geneva?
Only if you use Swiss motorways. If you drive from Annecy on the A41 and enter Geneva on ordinary roads at Saint-Julien or Bardonnex, you can avoid them, but the main Bardonnex crossing leads straight onto a Swiss motorway, where a vignette is required. The vignette is sold online and at border points and is valid for a calendar year.
