How to get from Amorgos to Astypalaia
Amorgos and Astypalaia are linked by a small number of direct ferries a week, mostly on the line from Piraeus that continues to Astypalaia via the Cyclades; the crossing takes roughly 2–3 hours. When no direct sailing fits, the alternative is a long detour via Naxos or Piraeus, or flights via Athens.
Best option: Ferry. A direct sailing, when it runs, is far quicker than any detour via Naxos, Piraeus or Athens.

Tips
- Plan your island hop around the ferry days, not the other way round: the direct boat is the constraint.
- Check whether the boat calls at Katapola or Aigiali; the two ports are about 30–40 minutes apart by road.
- Ferries on this route can arrive or leave in the small hours; arrange a taxi or your accommodation pickup in advance.
- In bad weather (strong meltemi in July–August, storms in winter) sailings can be cancelled.
Common questions
Is there a direct ferry from Amorgos to Astypalaia?
Yes, on some days. The ferry line from Piraeus to Astypalaia calls at Amorgos on part of its schedule, usually a few times a week, with more sailings in summer. Days and the Amorgos port used (Katapola or Aigiali) change with each season, so check current timetables before you fix your plans.
How long is the crossing?
Roughly 2 to 3 hours on a conventional ferry, depending on the port in Amorgos and any intermediate stops. Departure times are often late in the evening or at night, so you may arrive in Astypalaia after midnight. Arrange transfer to your room in advance because taxis on Astypalaia are few.
What if the direct ferry does not run on my day?
The detours are long. You can sail to Naxos or Piraeus and connect there to the next Astypalaia ferry, or go to Athens and fly to Astypalaia. Each option takes a full day or more. It is usually easier to adjust your nights so you can catch the direct boat.
Do I need to book in advance?
For foot passengers it is wise in July and August and around 15 August, when ferries in the eastern Cyclades fill up. If you bring a car, book as early as possible because car space on this line is limited. Tickets are sold online and through agencies in Katapola and Aigiali.
