How to get from Amalfi Coast to Capri
Capri is an island, so from the Amalfi Coast you go by boat. From about April to October direct ferries leave Positano (about 30–50 min) and Amalfi (about 1 h–1 h 20) for Marina Grande on Capri. In winter the direct boats stop and the usual route is a bus to Sorrento and a year-round ferry from there, about 2 h 30–3 h in total.
Best option: Ferry. In season a direct boat from Positano or Amalfi is the quickest and simplest way, with no road leg at all.

Tips
- Check the time of the last boat back before you leave; missing it can mean a costly night on Capri.
- Hire cars cannot be taken to Capri; non-resident vehicles are restricted on the island, so leave the car on the mainland.
- The funicular from Marina Grande to Capri town has long queues at mid-morning; go early or walk up (about 20–30 min).
- Boats to and from Capri are often cancelled on windy days, more so the small fast ones.
Common questions
Is there a ferry from Amalfi to Capri all year?
No. Direct boats from Amalfi and Positano run roughly from April to October and stop in winter. Outside that season, take a SITA bus to Sorrento and a ferry from Sorrento to Capri, which runs all year, or go via Salerno or Naples. Timetables change at the start and end of the season, so check current departures before you plan.
Can I do Capri as a day trip from the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, in season. From Positano the boat takes about 30–50 minutes, so you can have six or seven hours on the island. Check the last return boat, which can be late afternoon, and allow time for the funicular or bus queues back down to Marina Grande. A shared boat tour is another way to do it in one day.
Can I take my car to Capri?
In practice, no. Non-resident vehicles are restricted on Capri for much of the year and hire cars are not taken there. Park on the mainland, ideally where your ferry leaves, and use the island buses, taxis and funicular. Parking in Positano and Amalfi is limited and expensive in summer, so a bus or boat to the port can be easier.
Do I need to book the ferry to Capri ahead?
In July and August and on weekends it is wise to buy tickets online or at the port early, especially for the evening return. In shoulder season you can usually buy at the ticket office shortly before departure. Remember that boats are weather-dependent, so keep some flexibility if you are catching a flight or train afterwards.
