Why visit Yellowstone?

Yellowstone National Park, mostly in Wyoming in the United States, was established in 1872 as the world's first national park. It sits on a huge volcanic hotspot and has more than half of the world's geysers, along with hot springs, canyons and abundant wildlife.

Watch Old Faithful erupt, roughly every 60 to 110 minutes, and walk the boardwalks of the Upper Geyser Basin. Grand Prismatic Spring, with its rainbow colours, is best seen from the overlook trail above it. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone has Lower Falls and colourful canyon walls. In the Lamar and Hayden valleys, look for bison, elk, wolves and grizzly bears, ideally at dawn or dusk. Mammoth Hot Springs has terraces of white travertine. Distances inside the park are large, so plan two to four days. Most roads close to cars from early November to April, and summer lodging books up far ahead. Stay on boardwalks, as thermal areas are dangerous.
