Why visit Acadia?

Acadia National Park protects a rugged stretch of the Maine coast, mostly on Mount Desert Island, along with the Schoodic Peninsula and part of Isle au Haut. It combines granite mountains, rocky shores, lakes and spruce forests in a compact area. The town of Bar Harbor, right next to the park, is the usual base for visitors.

Drive the Park Loop Road, stopping at Sand Beach and at Thunder Hole, where waves crash loudly into a narrow rock inlet. Watch the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain, one of the first places in the United States to see the sun for part of the year; a vehicle reservation is needed in the busy season. Walk or cycle the historic carriage roads, built with the support of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and crossed by fine stone bridges. Stop at Jordan Pond for the view of the mountains known as the Bubbles, and try the popovers served at the Jordan Pond House. Experienced hikers can climb the iron rungs of the Beehive Trail. Bass Harbor Head Light is a favorite spot at sunset, and fresh Maine lobster is easy to find in the nearby harbors.
