Why visit Tsagarada?

Tsagarada is one of the most beautiful villages of Mount Pelion, spread across a green slope on the mountain's eastern side above the Aegean. Instead of a single centre it is made up of four neighbourhoods, each built around its own square and church, linked by old cobbled mule paths called kalderimia that wind through chestnut and plane forests.

In the square of Agia Paraskevi stands a vast plane tree said to be around a thousand years old, one of the largest in Greece. Stone mansions with slate roofs have been turned into guesthouses, and the village works well in every season: autumn for chestnuts and colours, winter for fireplaces and the ski centre at Hania, summer for the sea. Below the village a path leads down to Mylopotamos beach, where white pebbles and a rock arch frame turquoise water, and nearby Fakistra and Damouchari are equally striking. Eat spetzofai, a sausage and pepper stew, and local pies in the tavernas around the squares.
