Your day-by-day plan

Day1
Nafplio

Arrive in Nafplio

Morning: Fly into Athens, pick up a rental car, and drive 2 hours south to the charming neoclassical town of Nafplio.

Afternoon: Stroll the Venetian old town, climb the 999 steps to Palamidi Fortress for sweeping bay views, and explore the waterfront promenade.

Evening: Settle into a harbourside taverna for grilled octopus and local Nemea red wine.

Book Palamidi tickets online to skip the queue and arrive before 10am for cooler temperatures.
Day2
Nafplio

Mycenae & Epidaurus

Morning: Drive 30 minutes to Mycenae and walk the Bronze Age citadel, Lion Gate, and Treasury of Atreus tomb complex.

Afternoon: Head to Epidaurus and stand centre-stage in the 4th-century BC theatre, whose acoustics still stun modern architects.

Evening: Return to Nafplio for a sunset Campari on Syntagma Square and dinner at a family-run mezedopoleio.

Visit Mycenae first thing—it gets very hot and crowded by midday in summer.
Day3
Sparta

Drive to Ancient Sparta

Morning: Drive 90 minutes southwest to Sparta, tour the sparse but evocative archaeological site and the excellent Archaeological Museum.

Afternoon: Continue 8 km uphill to the ghost-city of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Byzantine settlement with frescoed churches and palace ruins.

Evening: Check into a hotel in Sparta and dine on Laconian pork dishes washed down with local tsipouro.

Wear sturdy shoes at Mystras—the cobbled paths are steep and uneven throughout the site.
Day4
Areopoli

Into the Wild Mani

Morning: Drive south into the rugged Mani Peninsula, stopping at the haunting cave of Diros with its underground lake and stalactites.

Afternoon: Explore the tower-house village of Vathia and the dramatic cape at Tainaron, said to be the gateway to the Underworld.

Evening: Check into a converted tower house in Areopoli and enjoy slow-cooked lamb with wild herbs at a stone-walled taverna.

The Diros cave tour is boat-guided and runs about 45 minutes—go early as visitor numbers are capped each hour.
Day5
Kalamata

Kalamata & Messene

Morning: Drive north to Ancient Messene, one of Greece's best-preserved yet least-visited sites, featuring a complete stadium, theatre, and agora.

Afternoon: Head to Kalamata, browse the olive oil market, and walk the waterfront promenade of this lively modern city.

Evening: Feast on fresh seafood at a Kalamata harbour restaurant and sample the city's world-famous PDO olives with local feta.

Ancient Messene is uncrowded even in peak season—combine it with a picnic lunch among the ruins for a magical experience.
Day6
Stoupa

Methoni & Stoupa Beach

Morning: Drive to the seaside village of Methoni and explore its extraordinary Venetian sea-fortress rising dramatically from the water's edge.

Afternoon: Head north along the coast to Stoupa, a beautiful sandy bay with crystal-clear calm water ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Evening: Enjoy a relaxed beachside dinner with fresh fish, tzatziki, and Peloponnesian white wine as the sun sets over the Messenian Gulf.

Methoni fortress is free to enter—the walk around the full walls takes about 45 minutes and rewards with stunning sea views.
Day7
Corinth

Corinth & Departure

Morning: Drive north toward Athens, stopping at the Corinth Canal viewpoint for photos of the dramatic 19th-century engineering marvel.

Afternoon: Visit Ancient Corinth, once one of the wealthiest cities in the Roman world, and the towering Temple of Apollo.

Evening: Return the rental car in Athens, grab a final souvlaki at a city-centre grill, and head to the airport for departure.

The Corinth Canal bridge is narrow—park in the small lot near the tourist shops and walk to the bridge on foot for safety.
