Why visit Ancient Corinth?
Ancient Corinth was one of the richest cities of the ancient world, controlling trade between two seas from its position beside the isthmus. Today the village sits right beside the excavated city, an hour from Athens, and the visit is one of the most rewarding in the Peloponnese. The seven surviving Doric columns of the Temple of Apollo, from the 6th century BC, are the image everyone knows, but the site also preserves the Roman forum, the Lechaion Road, the Peirene Fountain and the bema where, according to tradition, the Apostle Paul addressed the Corinthians.
The on-site museum holds sculpture, mosaics and pottery from the excavations. Above it all rises Acrocorinth, a huge fortified rock with Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman walls; drive or hike to the top for views over the Corinthian Gulf. Nearby you can see the Corinth Canal cut through the isthmus, and eat at village tavernas serving local wine from the Nemea area.
