Why visit Tioman?

Tioman is a large, mountainous island off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in the South China Sea, reached by ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok. Much of it is covered in protected rainforest, and its coral reefs are part of a marine park, which makes it one of Malaysia's best islands for diving and snorkelling.

The island is a string of small beach villages rather than one town. Air Batang (ABC) and Salang are popular with snorkellers and backpackers, Tekek is the main village with the airport strip and duty-free shops, and Juara on the east coast has a long, quiet surf beach and a turtle hatchery. Snorkel at Renggis Island, Coral Island and Monkey Bay, and dive at Tiger Reef and Chebeh. Hike the jungle trail across the island from Tekek to Juara, and visit the Asah waterfall in the south. Tioman is duty free, and seafood barbecues are the evening meal. The monsoon from November to February brings rough seas and fewer ferries.
