Why visit Ipoh?

Ipoh is the capital of Perak state in Malaysia, between Kuala Lumpur and Penang. It grew rich from tin mining in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and its old town has colonial buildings, Chinese shophouses and street art, surrounded by limestone hills full of cave temples.

Walk the old town to see the Ipoh railway station, nicknamed the Taj Mahal of Ipoh, the town hall, Concubine Lane and the murals by Ernest Zacharevic. Perak Cave Temple and Sam Poh Tong are Buddhist temples built inside limestone caves, and Kek Lok Tong has a garden and lake behind the cave. Kellie's Castle is an unfinished mansion built by a Scottish planter, and Gua Tempurung is a large show cave nearby. Ipoh is above all a food city: try Ipoh white coffee, which started here, bean sprout chicken, salted chicken, hor fun noodles and egg tarts. It is about two and a half hours from Kuala Lumpur by fast train.
