Why visit Malacca?

Malacca (Melaka) is a historic port city on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, about two hours south of Kuala Lumpur. It was a great trading port of the Malay sultanate and then ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, and together with George Town it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Start at the red Dutch Square with Christ Church and the Stadthuys, then climb St Paul's Hill to the ruined church and walk down to A Famosa, the gate of the Portuguese fort. Jonker Street, in Chinatown, has antique shops and a lively weekend night market. Cheng Hoon Teng is the oldest functioning Chinese temple in Malaysia, and the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum shows the life of the Peranakan community. Take a river cruise past murals and old warehouses, and visit the replica of the Malacca Sultanate Palace. Malacca is famous for its food: chicken rice balls, Nyonya laksa, satay celup and cendol with palm sugar.
