Why visit Soufriere?

Soufrière is a small town on the southwestern coast of Saint Lucia in the eastern Caribbean. It was the island's capital during the French colonial period. The town sits on a bay beside the Pitons, two volcanic peaks protected as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gros Piton and Petit Piton rise steeply from the sea and dominate every view in the area. Gros Piton can be climbed with a local guide on a demanding but non-technical trail. The Sulphur Springs, often called a drive-in volcano, have steaming vents and warm mud pools where visitors bathe. The Diamond Botanical Gardens include a waterfall coloured by minerals and old stone baths. Toraille Waterfall is a short walk from the road and has a pool at its base. The coastline is part of the Soufrière Marine Management Area, with good snorkelling and diving at Anse Chastanet and Sugar Beach between the Pitons. Several historic cocoa estates nearby show how chocolate is made from the bean. Try green fig and saltfish, the national dish, or a cup of local cocoa tea.
