Why visit Sfakia?

Sfakia is a rugged region on the south coast of western Crete, where the White Mountains drop almost straight into the Libyan Sea. Its people are known across Greece for their independence: the Sfakians rose against Ottoman rule under Daskalogiannis in 1770, and in May 1941 thousands of Allied soldiers were evacuated from these shores after the Battle of Crete. The main village, Chora Sfakion, is a small harbour with tavernas along the water.

Sfakia is a place for walkers. Most visitors who hike the Samaria Gorge finish at Agia Roumeli and take the ferry back here. A shorter, easier option is the Imbros Gorge, about eight kilometres long, which ends near the village of Komitades. West of Chora Sfakion, the car-free village of Loutro can only be reached by boat or on foot, and the coastal path passes Sweet Water Beach, where fresh water seeps up through the pebbles. To the east, the square Venetian fortress of Frangokastello stands on a long sandy beach. Do not leave without tasting Sfakian pie, a thin pastry filled with soft mizithra cheese and drizzled with honey. The best time to visit is April to June and September to October.
