How many days do you need in Sfakia?
Give it 4 days to base yourself for Southwest Crete. Sfakia is a rugged gateway, not a quick stop. You need time for the ferry-only access to Loutro, hiking the Samaria or Imbros Gorges, and the slow pace of Chora Sfakion's harbor tavernas. Transfers via winding mountain roads take longer than they look.
Short answer

2 days
Focus on Chora Sfakion and a ferry trip to the car-free village of Loutro. You can squeeze in a hike through the manageable Imbros Gorge and enjoy dinner at a traditional waterfront taverna like The Three Brothers.
You give up: You miss the grueling Samaria Gorge, the remote Agia Roumeli, and the ferry to Gavdos island.
4 days
Explore the White Mountains deeply. Hike Samaria Gorge, take the ferry to the pebbled beaches of Agia Roumeli and Phoenix, and visit the Venetian fortress of Frangokastello. Enjoy swimming at Glyka Nera (Sweet Water Beach) accessible only by boat or cliff path.
You give up: You will miss exploring the far western beaches like Elafonisi or the northern city of Chania in depth.
7 days
A complete Libyan Sea experience. Includes an overnight on Gavdos, the southernmost point of Europe, and remote coastal treks along the E4 path to Agia Roumeli. You can also explore the Anopolis plateau for authentic mountain culture and Sfakian pies.
You give up: You sacrifice time in the more developed North Coast resorts and the eastern Lasithi region.
If you can stay longer
An extra 3 days allows a ferry expedition to Gavdos Island or a multi-day trek on the E4 coastal trail toward Sougia, staying in remote guesthouses and visiting the ancient site of Lissos.

Common questions
Is it easy to drive to?
The drive from Chania involves steep, narrow switchbacks over the White Mountains. It takes about 90 minutes. Once there, cars are useless for reaching Loutro or Agia Roumeli; you must rely on the reliable but weather-dependent ANENDYK ferry lines.
When is the best time?
Visit in May, June, or September. July and August are punishingly hot for gorge hiking and the ferries get crowded. In winter, many tavernas close and the ferry schedule is significantly reduced, making access to car-free villages difficult.
Can I see Samaria from here?
Yes, Chora Sfakion is the main hub for returning from the gorge. You take a ferry from the hike's end at Agia Roumeli back to Sfakia. To hike it, take an early bus to Omalos and finish by catching the boat.
