Why visit San Antonio?

San Antonio is a large city in south-central Texas, founded around a Spanish mission settlement in the early eighteenth century. Its history mixes Spanish, Mexican and Texan influences, which shape its architecture, festivals and food. The city is best known for the Alamo and for the River Walk, a network of paths along the San Antonio River.

Start at the Alamo, the former mission where a famous battle of the Texas Revolution took place in 1836. Then follow the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, whose four other missions, together with the Alamo, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk or take a boat tour along the River Walk, lined with restaurants and bridges below street level. Visit Historic Market Square for Mexican crafts, and the Pearl district, a former brewery turned into a food and shopping area. The King William Historic District has fine nineteenth-century houses, and San Fernando Cathedral hosts evening light shows on its facade. Tex-Mex cooking is the local specialty, from breakfast tacos to enchiladas, and Fiesta San Antonio fills the city with parades every April.
