Why visit Puerto Ayora?

Puerto Ayora is the largest town in the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador, on the southern coast of Santa Cruz Island. It is the main base for land-based visits to the archipelago and for many cruises. Visitors arrive via the airport on nearby Baltra Island, and a national park entry fee is required.

The Charles Darwin Research Station works on conservation and has a breeding program for giant tortoises. A paved trail leads from town to Tortuga Bay, a long white beach where marine iguanas rest on the sand, with a calm cove for swimming. Las Grietas is a narrow crevice of clear water between lava walls, good for swimming and snorkeling. In the highlands, the El Chato reserve lets visitors see giant tortoises in the wild, and nearby lava tunnels can be walked through. The twin sinkholes of Los Gemelos are surrounded by scalesia forest. At the town fish market, sea lions and pelicans gather around the counters. Day trips by boat visit islands such as North Seymour, Bartolomé and Santa Fe.
