Why visit Pai?

Pai is a small town in a green mountain valley in Mae Hong Son province, in the far north of Thailand, reached from Chiang Mai along a famously winding road with hundreds of bends. It began as a quiet Shan market town and is now a relaxed base for backpackers, couples and anyone who wants cool mountain air, rice fields and slow days.

The walking street fills every evening with food stalls, live music and small bars. Watch sunset from Pai Canyon (Kong Lan), a network of narrow sandstone ridges, and visit the white Buddha of Wat Phra That Mae Yen on the hill above town. Rent a scooter to reach the Mo Paeng and Pam Bok waterfalls, the Tha Pai hot springs, the bamboo bridge across the rice fields at Boon Ko Ku So, and the Chinese village of Santichon. In the cool season, from November to February, mornings are misty and nights can be chilly. Eat khao soi, northern sausage and street-side roti.
