Why visit Ometepe?

Ometepe is an island in Lake Nicaragua, the large freshwater lake in the south of the country, formed by two volcanoes joined by a low, narrow strip of land. Concepción is a tall, active cone, while Maderas is lower, covered in cloud forest and holds a small lagoon in its crater. Around them lie small villages, farms and quiet beaches, giving the island a slow, rural rhythm that many travellers love. Ometepe is also a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and howler monkeys are often heard in the trees.

Most people come for the outdoors. Strong hikers can climb Concepción or Maderas with a local guide, and both are long, tough days. Easier options include swimming in the clear spring-fed pool of Ojo de Agua, walking to the San Ramón waterfall on the slopes of Maderas, and relaxing on Playa Santo Domingo, a long sandy beach on the isthmus between the volcanoes. Many visitors rent a scooter or bicycle to ride around the island, stopping at viewpoints, ancient petroglyphs and the Charco Verde lagoon. Kayaking on the lake is popular too. Ferries and smaller boats cross from San Jorge, near Rivas, to Moyogalpa in about an hour. The best time to visit is December to April, the dry season, when trails are easier.
