Why visit Nizwa?

Nizwa is a historic city in the interior of northern Oman, at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. It was once the capital of Oman and remains one of the country's most important centres of history and religion. Surrounded by palm groves and mountains, it is the classic first stop on any trip beyond Muscat.

Nizwa Fort, with its huge round tower, offers views over the city, the date palms and the mountains. Next to it, Nizwa Souq sells pottery, silver khanjar daggers, dates and halwa, Oman's famous sweet. On Friday mornings, the livestock market draws crowds of locals buying and selling goats and cattle. Nearby, Bahla Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Jabreen Castle has beautifully painted ceilings. The mountain plateau of Jebel Akhdar, known for its terraces and roses, and Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain with views into a deep canyon, are both within reach. The mountain village of Misfat al Abriyeen shows the traditional falaj irrigation channels still in use.
