Where to stay in Oman

Oman is a vast, rugged landscape where infrastructure is sparse, making your base location critical. Most activity centers on the capital, Muscat, which stretches narrowly along the coast between mountains and the sea. Because public transport is nonexistent for tourists, staying centrally is vital to avoid hours of driving on dual carriageways. For excursions into the desert or mountains, choose specific hubs that minimize your daily transit time.

Oman

Shatti Al-Qurum

UpscaleLuxury travelers and beach lovers seeking refined relaxation and easy access to high-end coastal resorts and dining.

This is Muscat’s most polished shoreline district. You can walk along the paved promenade at Shatti Al-Qurum beach, which feels relaxed and open. The area is home to the Royal Opera House Muscat, a stunning architectural landmark. Many upscale cafes and the sleek Al Sarooj street are steps away, offering a sophisticated, modern atmosphere away from the city's denser, older trading hubs.

Muttrah

Mid-rangeHistory enthusiasts and photographers looking for authentic atmosphere, vibrant street markets, and traditional Omani maritime architecture.

Muttrah is the historic heart of Muscat. Walking through the Muttrah Souq is an intense, sensory experience of frankincense and silver. The nearby Muttrah Corniche provides a beautiful walking path along the harbor, perfect for sunrise or sunset. You are within reach of the Bait Al Zubair Museum and the active fish market, making it the most walkable district in the entire country.

Nizwa

Mixed pricesIndependent explorers and culture seekers focused on visiting the Hajar Mountains, ancient fortresses, and traditional Omani village life.

Nizwa serves as the functional base for the interior. The town is dominated by the massive 17th-century Nizwa Fort, which is easily reachable on foot from central guesthouses. The nearby souq is famous for its Friday livestock market. The town feels grounded and dusty, a necessary tactical point for reaching Jebel Shams and the rugged canyon trails that define Oman’s mountain tourism.

One thing to think about

Avoid staying in Seeb if your goal is sightseeing. While close to the airport, it is essentially a sprawling residential suburb disconnected from the main cultural sites. You will find yourself trapped in heavy traffic on the Sultan Qaboos Highway for up to an hour just to reach the attractions in Muttrah or the Old City.

Common questions

Do I really need to rent a 4x4 vehicle?

If you plan to stick to Muscat and paved highways, a sedan is sufficient. However, for any mountain travel, including trips to Jebel Akhdar or off-road wadis, a 4x4 is mandatory. Oman’s terrain is punishing, and many mountain roads are restricted to high-clearance vehicles by law for safety reasons.

How should I dress when exploring Omani towns?

Oman is culturally conservative. While beach resorts are relaxed, you must dress modestly in public areas like Muttrah or Nizwa. Keep shoulders and knees covered at all times. This applies to both men and women; wearing loose, breathable linen or cotton clothing is the most practical way to stay cool while respecting local customs.

Is alcohol easily available during my stay?

Alcohol is restricted in Oman and generally only available at licensed hotel bars and restaurants. You cannot purchase it in standard supermarkets or grocery stores. If you are staying in a budget guesthouse or a private apartment, do not expect to find alcohol nearby. Always verify your hotel's liquor license status before booking if this is a priority.
