Why visit Mount Olympus?

Mount Olympus, the legendary home of the twelve gods, is Greece's highest mountain, with Mytikas rising to 2,918 metres. It was declared Greece's first national park in 1938, and its forests, gorges and alpine meadows are home to hundreds of plant species, some found nowhere else.

The usual base is Litochoro, a pleasant town at the foot of the mountain, a short drive from the sea. From there a road climbs to Prionia, the trailhead for the classic route up to Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos), where hikers spend the night before tackling the summit area. Less demanding walks follow the Enipeas gorge, with its pools and waterfalls, and lead to the Monastery of Saint Dionysios. At the foot of the mountain, the archaeological park of Dion preserves the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians, with sanctuaries, mosaics and a museum. The beaches of the Pieria coast are close by, so you can combine mountain and sea in one trip.
