How many days do you need in Mount Olympus?

Give Mount Olympus 3 to 4 days to tackle the climb safely without rushing. Starting from Litochoro through the Enipeas Gorge, staying overnight in high mountain huts like Spilios Agapitos, and scaling peaks like Skala, Skolio, and Mytikas requires patience for changing alpine weather and acclimatization.

Mount Olympus

2 days

Hike from Prionia to Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos) on day one. Early next morning, summit Skala or Skolio before descending all the way back to Prionia or Litochoro. It is intensely physical with zero buffer for storms.

You give up: Skips the stunning Enipeas Gorge trek, the Plateau of the Muses, and technical Mytikas.

3 days

Trek Enipeas Gorge to Prionia, continuing up to Refuge A. Day two cross the Zonaria trail to the Plateau of the Muses and attempt Mytikas or Profitis Ilias. Day three descends via Giosos Apostolidis refuge to Gortsia.

You give up: Rushes summit mornings; leaves no room to explore the coastal ruins of ancient Dion.

4 days

A complete loop from Gortsia across Petrostrouga up to the Plateau of the Muses. Summit Mytikas and Skolio with ample weather windows, traverse to Refuge A, and descend through Enipeas Gorge to Litochoro, adding a visit to Dion archaeological park.

You give up: Requires high endurance carrying multi-day packs across rocky, exposed ridgelines.

If you can stay longer

An extra 2-3 days lets you visit the ancient sanctuary of Zeus at Dion, explore the Venetian castle of Platamon, and relax on the Aegean beaches of Plaka Litochorou.

Common questions

Do I need climbing gear to summit Mytikas?

Yes, a climbing helmet is essential due to loose rockfall on the Kakiskala scramble. A harness and via ferrata lanyard are strongly advised, and hiring a local mountain guide is smart if you lack alpine scrambling experience.

When is the best season to hike Mount Olympus?

Between June and October. The mountain refuges are generally open from May to late October. Snow covers high trails until early summer, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent in July and August, requiring early morning summit pushes.

Are the mountain refuges fully serviced?

Yes, main huts like Spilios Agapitos and Giosos Apostolidis provide dorm beds, blankets, hot meals, and bottled water. However, you must reserve beds months in advance and bring a sleeping bag liner, headlamp, and cash for payment.
