Why visit Lake Kerkini?

Lake Kerkini, in the north of Greece close to the Bulgarian border, is a reservoir on the Strymonas river that has become one of the most important wetlands in Europe. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, and it is famous for the Dalmatian pelicans that winter on the lake, as well as cormorants, herons and flamingos.

The best way to see them is on a small boat trip with local fishermen, gliding past the flooded forest of willows where cormorants and herons nest. Water buffalo graze along the shore and often wade into the lake, a sight unique in Greece. The villages of Kerkini and Lithotopos are the main bases, with guesthouses and a visitor centre. The surrounding Belles and Krousia mountains offer walking routes and views over the water. Eat buffalo meat and dairy products, as well as lake fish, in the local tavernas. Winter and spring are the best times for birdwatching.
