Where to stay in Lake Kerkini
Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir in northern Greece bordered by the Kerkini mountains to the north and farm plains to the south. The lake’s perimeter is lined with small, quiet agricultural villages. Where you sleep dictates your primary activities: northern villages put you near mountain trails and river deltas, while southern villages offer direct boat access and flat cycling routes along the embankment.

Kerkini Village
Set on the southwestern shore, this is the main hub for lake activities. It feels like a functional rural village anchored by a quiet central square. You can walk straight to the port for boat trips to see pelicans, rent bicycles, or eat at local spots serving water buffalo stews along the main road.
Ano Poroia
Perched on the slopes of Mount Belles above the lake's northwestern shore, this village is shaded by massive plane trees. It trades direct water views for gushing spring streams, cobblestone alleys, and cooler air. Walk to local trout farms and forest trailheads directly from your guesthouse.
Mandraki & Akritochori
Located on the north shore, these neighboring hamlets sit close to the Strymon River delta where birds nest. The vibe is slow and unpolished. You can walk along the dirt dikes directly from local guesthouses into wetland meadows, avoiding the larger tour buses that park near Kerkini village.
One thing to think about
Avoid staying far south in Sidirokastro if your primary goal is dawn nature watching. The daily drive back and forth across highway corridors wastes daylight, and you lose the quiet rural atmosphere of the shoreline villages.

Once you have a bed
The things that sell out first in Lake Kerkini are the small-group tours and the skip-the-line tickets.
Common questions
How many days should I spend around the lake?
Three days is ideal. Spend one day on a boat tour and biking the southern dikes, a second day hiking up in Ano Poroia, and a third exploring the northern Strymon River delta. A weekend gives you enough time to experience both the water and mountain environments.
