Why visit Lake Atitlan?

Lake Atitlán is a large volcanic lake in the highlands of western Guatemala. It is surrounded by three volcanoes, Atitlán, Tolimán and San Pedro, and by a ring of villages where many residents are Maya. Boats called lanchas connect the villages, which each have a different character.

Panajachel is the main gateway, with a busy street of shops and the main boat docks. San Juan La Laguna is known for its weaving cooperatives, where women show how cotton is dyed with natural plants. San Marcos La Laguna attracts visitors interested in yoga and meditation, while San Pedro La Laguna is popular with backpackers. In Santiago Atitlán, the largest town on the lake, visitors can see the local folk saint Maximón, whose shrine moves between homes. Early risers hike to the Indian Nose (Rostro Maya) to watch the sunrise over the volcanoes. The ascent of San Pedro volcano is a longer hike with wide views of the lake. The market town of Chichicastenango, known for its Thursday and Sunday markets, can be visited as a day trip.
