Why visit Key Largo?

Key Largo is the first of the Florida Keys reached by road and one of the largest, at the start of the Overseas Highway south of Miami. It sits between Florida Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Just offshore lies the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, which makes the island one of the top diving destinations in the country.

Snorkel or dive in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the United States. One of its best-known sights is the bronze Christ of the Abyss statue, resting underwater at Key Largo Dry Rocks. Experienced divers can explore the Spiegel Grove, a large former Navy ship sunk as an artificial reef. Take a glass-bottom boat tour if you prefer to stay dry, or paddle a kayak through the mangroves. Everglades National Park lies close by on the mainland for a day of wildlife watching. End the day with a sunset over Florida Bay, conch fritters and a slice of Key lime pie.
