Why visit Isla Mujeres?

Isla Mujeres is a narrow island in the Mexican Caribbean, a short ferry ride from Cancún in the state of Quintana Roo. It is about 7 kilometers long and is easy to explore by golf cart, scooter or bicycle. The pace is slower than on the mainland, with a walkable town center at its northern end.

Playa Norte, at the northern tip of the island, has calm, shallow turquoise water and is one of the best-known beaches in the area. At the southern end, Punta Sur offers cliffs, sea views and the ruins of a small Maya temple dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. Snorkelers and divers can visit MUSA, the underwater sculpture museum in the waters between the island and Cancún. Garrafón Park offers snorkeling and swimming on the southern coast. The Tortugranja is a turtle conservation center where visitors can see sea turtles at different stages of growth. From roughly June to September, boat tours leave the island to swim with whale sharks. In town, fresh fish dishes such as tikin xic are common.
