Why visit Guanajuato?

Guanajuato is the capital of the state of the same name, set in a narrow mountain valley in central Mexico. It grew rich from silver mining in the colonial era, and its historic town and nearby mines are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brightly painted houses climb the hillsides, and many roads run through tunnels beneath the city.

Walk the winding alleys of the center and find the Callejon del Beso, a lane so narrow that balconies on opposite sides almost touch. Admire the Teatro Juarez, the yellow Basilica of Our Lady of Guanajuato and the grand steps of the University of Guanajuato. Ride the funicular up to the Pipila monument for the best view over the city. Visit the Alhondiga de Granaditas, a granary turned museum that played a key role in the early War of Independence. The Museo de las Momias displays naturally mummified bodies, and the Diego Rivera House Museum marks the painter's birthplace. In the evening, follow a callejoneada, a musical walk led by students in old Spanish costumes, and try enchiladas mineras. Each October the city hosts the Festival Internacional Cervantino, one of the major arts festivals in Latin America.
