Why visit Bacalar?

Bacalar is a small town in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, in the south of the Yucatán Peninsula near the border with Belize. It sits on the shore of Laguna Bacalar, a long freshwater lagoon known as the Lagoon of Seven Colors for its shifting shades of blue. Mexico lists it as one of its Pueblos Mágicos, and it is much quieter than the resort towns further north.

Spend a day on the lagoon by sailboat or kayak, stopping at the Pirate Channel (Canal de los Piratas) and the Cenote Esmeralda. Swim at Cenote Azul, a deep round sinkhole just south of town. Visit Los Rápidos, where a gentle current flows over shallow white sand. The lagoon also holds stromatolites, some of the oldest forms of life on Earth, which visitors are asked not to touch or stand on. In town, the San Felipe Fort, built by the Spanish to defend against pirates, now houses a small museum on the history of the region. Local restaurants serve Yucatecan dishes such as cochinita pibil and sopa de lima. The Maya sites of Chacchoben and Kohunlich are within day-trip distance.
