Why visit Cozumel?

Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean, lying off the coast of Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo. Its main town, San Miguel de Cozumel, faces the mainland across a channel and is a major cruise ship port. The island is best known for the coral reefs that line its southwestern coast.

The Cozumel Reefs National Park protects reefs such as Palancar and Columbia, which are among the most popular diving sites in the Caribbean. Snorkelers can explore Chankanaab Park, which also has a lagoon and botanical garden. At the southern tip, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park has a lighthouse, a lagoon with crocodiles and quiet beaches. The ruins of San Gervasio were once an important Maya pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Ixchel. The eastern side of the island is wild and windswept, with long empty beaches that are often unsafe for swimming. Ferries connect San Miguel with Playa del Carmen several times a day. Along the waterfront, restaurants serve seafood and Yucatecan dishes.
