Why visit Holbox?

Holbox is a narrow island off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It lies within the Yum Balam protected area and is reached by ferry from the small port of Chiquilá. Cars are largely absent, and people get around on foot, by bicycle or by golf cart along sandy streets.

The beaches on the north shore have shallow, calm water that is well suited to wading and swimming. Walk at low tide to Punta Mosquito, a sandbar where flamingos are often seen, or head west to Punta Cocos for sunset. From about June to September, boat tours leave the island to swim with whale sharks in the open sea. On dark nights, some visitors see bioluminescent plankton glowing in the shallows. Boat trips also visit Isla Pasión, Isla de los Pájaros and the Yalahau cenote on the mainland coast. The island is known for its lobster pizza and fresh ceviche. Colorful murals cover many buildings in the village.
