Why visit Bwindi?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a steep, misty rainforest in the southwest of Uganda, close to the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to around half of the world's mountain gorillas. Spending an hour with a gorilla family in the forest is one of the most moving wildlife experiences in Africa.

Gorilla treks start each morning from four areas of the park: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Rangers lead small groups along muddy trails, and the walk can take from one to several hours, so good boots and fitness help. Permits are limited, cost several hundred US dollars and must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a tour operator. Bwindi is also excellent for birdwatching, with many species found only in this part of Africa, and you can join community walks run by local Batwa and Bakiga people. The drive from Kampala takes a full day, so many visitors fly to small airstrips nearby. The drier months, from June to August and from December to February, are the most comfortable.
