Why visit Batanes?

Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines, a group of small islands between Luzon and Taiwan. With its rolling green hills, steep cliffs, quiet villages and wide open sea, it feels very different from the rest of the country. The local Ivatan people are known for their warm hospitality and for their traditional stone houses, built with thick walls and grass roofs to survive the strong winds and typhoons that often hit the islands.

Most visitors stay in Basco, the capital, on Batan Island. From here you can visit the Basco Lighthouse on Naidi Hills, the grassy slopes of Marlboro Country, the Vayang Rolling Hills and Valugan Boulder Beach, covered in large stones. A boat ride takes you to Sabtang Island, where the village of Chavayan still has rows of old Ivatan stone houses, and Morong Beach has a natural rock arch. On Batan you can also stop at the Honesty Coffee Shop, where visitors pay without a shopkeeper. Batanes is reached by flights from Manila to Basco. The best time to visit is March to May, when the weather is usually calm and sunny. From June to November typhoons can cancel flights and boat trips, so leave a few spare days in your plans.
