Why visit Banaue?

Banaue is a mountain town in Ifugao province, in the Cordillera of northern Luzon in the Philippines. It is surrounded by rice terraces carved into the mountainsides by the Ifugao people more than 2,000 years ago, according to tradition, and the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Banaue viewpoint, just outside town, gives the classic view over the valley terraces. The most famous terraces in the UNESCO listing are at Batad, shaped like an amphitheatre, where you can trek through the walls and on to Tappiya waterfall, and at Bangaan, a traditional village. Further away are the terraces of Hapao, Hungduan and Mayoyao. Guides lead day treks and multi-day walks between villages, and local homestays offer simple rooms with terrace views. Learn about Ifugao culture, wood carving and the traditional thatched houses. The best time to see green terraces is around planting and growth, roughly February to July. The bus from Manila takes about nine hours overnight.
