How many days in Curaçao? 5 days: Willemstad, the western beaches and Klein Curaçao
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Curaçao is about 60 km long, dry and cactus-covered, with a UNESCO-listed Dutch capital at one end and small cove beaches along the whole southwest coast. Give it five days: one for Willemstad, two for the Banda Abou in the west, with its national park and the island's best snorkelling, one for the wild north coast, and one by boat to the uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao. A rental car is essential.
Short answer
Three days covers Willemstad and two beach days in the west. Five days adds Christoffel National Park, Shete Boka and Klein Curaçao.

The 5-day plan, day by day
Day 1: Willemstad: Punda, Otrobanda and Pietermaai
Morning. Start in Punda on the Handelskade, the row of pastel 18th-century merchant houses on the harbour channel. Walk 5 minutes to the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue (1732), the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas, with sand on the floor; entry with the Jewish museum is about Cg 20 (US$11). See Fort Amsterdam next door, now the governor's office.
Afternoon. Cross the Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge from 1888 that swings open several times an hour to let ships through; when it is open, a free ferry runs. In Otrobanda, visit the Kura Hulanda Museum (about Cg 25), on the transatlantic slave trade and Afro-Curaçaoan history.
Evening. Walk to Pietermaai, the restored district east of Punda, for dinner in colonial mansions turned restaurants and bars; mains cost Cg 35-60. Its courtyard bars are livelier on Thursday and Friday nights.
For lunch, go to Plasa Bieu (Old Market) behind the post office in Punda, where local cooks serve stewed goat, fish and funchi at long tables for Cg 20-30, at lunchtime only.
Day 2: Christoffel National Park and Playa Kenepa
Morning. Drive about 45 minutes west to Christoffel National Park at opening (around 7:30). Climb Christoffelberg, at 372 metres the highest point on the island, in about 1.5-2 hours return, with some scrambling at the top. Entry is about Cg 25-35; hikers must usually start by 10:00 because of the heat.
Afternoon. Cool off at Playa Kenepa Grandi (Grote Knip), the island's most photographed beach: white sand between cliffs and very clear water. Then try Playa Kenepa Chiki next door, smaller and calmer.
Evening. Watch sunset from the cliffs at Playa Forti in Westpunt, where people jump 12 metres into the sea from the restaurant terrace, then drive back to Willemstad (about 50 minutes).
Bring water and a hat on Christoffel; there is no shade near the summit. The park also has a short drive through cactus landscapes and old plantation sites if you skip the hike.
Day 3: Snorkelling the Banda Abou
Morning. Start at Playa Piskado (Playa Grandi), where fishermen clean their catch on the pier and green turtles come in to feed. Snorkel quietly a few metres out; do not touch or feed them. Gear rents for about Cg 15-25 at the beach.
Afternoon. Drive 10 minutes to Playa Lagun, a narrow cove with rocky walls full of fish, then on to Cas Abao for a long sandy beach with a bar and loungers (entry about Cg 10-15 per car or person, loungers extra).
Evening. Stop at Landhuis Kenepa, a restored plantation house, if open, then eat fresh fish at a local snack or the Westpunt restaurants before driving back.
Many western beaches charge a small entry fee because they are on private land; it usually covers parking, toilets and showers.
Day 4: Klein Curaçao by boat
Morning. Boats leave from the Jan Thiel and Caracasbaai area at about 6:30-7:30 for Klein Curaçao, an uninhabited flat island about 25 km southeast. The crossing takes 1.5-2 hours and can be rough on the way out. Day trips cost about Cg 180-250 with breakfast, lunch and snorkel gear.
Afternoon. Walk 15 minutes across the island to the old pink lighthouse and the rusting shipwreck on the windward coast, then snorkel on the reef, where turtles are common. Back on the boat, there is usually a stop at Tugboat dive site near Caracasbaai.
Evening. Have a sunset drink at Mambo Beach or Jan Thiel Beach, two developed beaches with clubs and restaurants on the southeast coast.
Take seasickness tablets before the morning crossing if you need them; the return with the wind behind you is much smoother.
Day 5: Shete Boka, Hato Caves and Blue Curaçao
Morning. Drive to Shete Boka National Park on the north coast (about 35 minutes; around Cg 20) to see the waves explode into Boka Tabla, an underground cave you can enter on foot, and the blowholes along the coral cliffs.
Afternoon. Visit the Hato Caves (about Cg 25 with a guide), limestone caves with stalactites, fruit bats and ancient Amerindian drawings. Then stop at Landhuis Chobolobo, where Blue Curaçao liqueur is made from the peels of the bitter laraha orange; a short tour with tasting costs about Cg 30.
Evening. End in Scharloo, across the Wilhelmina Bridge from Punda, for street art and colonial mansions, then dinner back in Pietermaai or at a waterfront place in Otrobanda.
The north coast is wild and unswimmable; do not go in the water at Shete Boka.
Only have 3 days?
With 3 days, do Willemstad, then one day for Christoffel and Playa Kenepa and one for Playa Piskado, Playa Lagun and Cas Abao. You lose Klein Curaçao and the north coast.
Got extra days?
Divers can easily add several days: the island has more than 60 shore-dive sites, including the Mushroom Forest and Watamula. Others hop over to Bonaire, about 30 minutes by plane, for flamingos and more reef.

Getting around
Rent a car: buses exist but are slow and irregular, and the best beaches are spread over 50 km. A small car costs about Cg 70-110 a day; drive on the right. Big buses run from the Punda and Otrobanda terminals to Westpunt a few times a day for about Cg 3-4, and private 'bus' vans cover shorter routes. Taxis have fixed fares: from Curaçao International Airport (Hato) to Willemstad about Cg 45-55. Within central Willemstad, walk.
What to eat in Curaçao
Curaçaoan cooking mixes African, Dutch and Latin American flavours. Try keshi yena, a ball of Edam or Gouda stuffed with spiced chicken and baked, stoba (stew) of goat or beef, funchi (cornmeal, like polenta) and pastechi, fried turnovers with cheese or tuna, sold at breakfast for Cg 2-4. Fresh fish at the truck stops (truki pan) late at night, and at Westpunt by day, costs Cg 25-40 a plate. Drink Amstel Bright or local juice made from tamarind and sorsaka (soursop). Restaurants in Pietermaai cost Cg 40-80 per person.
Best time to visit
Curaçao is outside the main hurricane belt and sunny all year, at 28-32°C. January to April is dry and breezy and the busiest season, with Carnival in February. May to August is hotter but calm. October to December is the short rainy season, with brief showers. September and October have the calmest sea, the best for divers and for the Klein Curaçao crossing.

Common questions
Do I need a car in Curaçao?
Yes, for anything beyond Willemstad and the resort beaches. The western beaches, Christoffel and Shete Boka are 30-50 minutes from town, and buses run only a few times a day. Rent for at least three days. Roads are good, but watch for goats, speed bumps and the roundabouts around Willemstad, and do not leave valuables visible in the car at beaches.
Which is the best beach in Curaçao?
Playa Kenepa Grandi is the classic photo, with white sand under cliffs. For snorkelling, Playa Lagun and Playa Piskado, where turtles feed. Cas Abao and Porto Mari have more facilities and long sand, while Mambo Beach and Jan Thiel are developed beaches with bars and music close to Willemstad. Most charge a small entry or parking fee.
Do I need anything to enter Curaçao?
Most visitors need a valid passport and must fill in the free online Dutch Caribbean digital immigration card (ED card) before travelling. Many nationalities, including US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens, do not need a visa for short stays. Check the latest rules for your passport before booking, as requirements can change.
Is Curaçao good for diving?
Very good, and much of it is from the shore. Reefs start a few metres from the beach along the southwest coast, with steep walls, healthy coral and sites like the Tugboat wreck at Caracasbaai. Dive centres rent tanks and trucks for self-guided shore diving, and the sea is warm all year at about 26-29°C.
