Is Vienna expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Vienna is mid-range to expensive for Western Europe: museums, coffee houses and restaurants cost clearly more than in Prague or Budapest, but less than in Paris, London or Zurich. A realistic day costs about €100 per person on a budget and about €200 mid-range. Beds and tickets take most of the money, while public transport, Würstelstand food and lunch menus are reasonable.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost: a bed in a shared double runs about €50 a night on a budget, €90 mid-range and €200 in comfort, with Ringstrasse grand hotels much higher, plus a small city tax. Food costs about €25 a day on bakery breakfasts, sausage stands and lunch menus, or €50 with a Beisl dinner and wine. Sights and concerts are a real expense at about €20–50 a day, since Schönbrunn, the Hofburg, the Belvedere and the Kunsthistorisches each cost roughly €17–30. Transport is efficient and fairly cheap at about €6–8 a day.
When it is cheaper
January (after New Year), February and March are the cheapest months, with hotel prices often roughly 20–40% lower than in May, June or September. The Christmas market season from late November and New Year's Eve are busy and pricier.
How to spend less
- Eat the weekday Mittagsmenü (lunch menu) in a Beisl, often soup and a main for much less than dinner prices.
- Order 'Schnitzel vom Schwein' (pork) if you want the dish for less; veal Wiener Schnitzel costs roughly €10 more.
- Buy State Opera standing-room tickets online the day before or at the box office about 80 minutes before the performance, for under €20.
- Buy single museum tickets rather than the Vienna Pass unless you plan four or more paid sights a day.
- Send back table bread or pretzels you do not want; they are charged per piece.
- Choose a Heuriger that shows the pine branch and serves its own wine, rather than coach-tour taverns in Grinzing.
