Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, with prices rising on opera nights and during Vinitaly in April, when every hotel fills. Opera tickets range from €30 to €250. Restaurants around Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe charge more than those in Veronetta. The compact old town keeps transport costs low.
When it is cheaper
November to March (outside the Christmas market and Vinitaly) is cheapest; summer opera season and April's Vinitaly week are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Buy the VeronaCard if you will visit three or four paid sights.
- Eat in Veronetta, where trattorias are cheaper.
- Choose unreserved stone-step seats for the opera.
- Stay near Porta Nuova or in Veronetta.
- Take the train to Lake Garda instead of a tour.
- Avoid Vinitaly week if you are not attending.
